Joe-Pye Weed

Joe-Pye Weed’s spectacular pink blooms are adding color to our natural landscape right now. There are three varieties of Joe-Pye Weed native to Clear Lake, IN.

Spotted Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium maculatum)
Known as Spotted Joe-Pye Weed or just Joe-Pye Weed, this is the most common variety in Northeast Indiana. Spotted Joe-Pye Weed likes lots of sun and water allowing it to grow up to 5 feet tall. Its large, rose-pink blooms are like a magnet for bees and butterflies.

Hollow Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium fistulosum)
Hollow Joe-Pye Weed contains a hollow main stem that can be purple to off-white in color. This species of Joe-Pye Weed also likes sun and lots of water and grows to around 6 feet tall with a bright pink bloom on top.

Sweet Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum)
Sweet Joe-Pye Weed’s large blooms smell of vanilla attracting a variety of pollinators. This species prefers well-drained soil and partial shade. However, it can still be up to 7 feet tall with soft pink blooms on top.

Spotted Joe-Pye Weed and Sweet Joe-Pye Weed can be viewed at Brennan Woods along the trail and in the fen.
